How to Wash Sneakers the Right Way

Step 1: Identify the Material

Different materials require different cleaning methods.

  • Canvas and knit fabrics: Safe for hand or machine washing.
  • Leather and suede: Never submerge in water; spot clean only.
  • Mesh or mixed materials: Gentle hand washing is best.

Always check the care label inside the shoe before cleaning.

Step 2: Prepare the Sneakers

  1. Remove laces and insoles. Wash them separately. Laces can go in a mesh bag, and insoles should be scrubbed with mild soap and water.
  2. Brush off loose dirt. Use a dry brush or an old toothbrush to remove surface dust and mud.
  3. Maintain shape. Stuff the shoes with paper towels to help them keep their structure while cleaning.

Step 3: Hand Wash (Recommended)

Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent or sneaker cleaner.

  1. Dip a soft brush or cloth into the solution.
  2. Gently scrub the upper, sole, and edges of each shoe.
  3. Rinse lightly with a damp cloth — do not soak.
  4. Wipe away any soap residue and allow the shoes to air dry.

A melamine sponge or “magic eraser” can be used to brighten rubber midsoles.

Step 4: Machine Wash (For Fabric Sneakers Only)

If your sneakers are canvas or similar fabric, they can be machine washed with care.

  1. Place them inside a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase.
  2. Add a few towels to the load to reduce impact.
  3. Use cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.
  4. Do not use the dryer; allow the shoes to air dry naturally.

Step 5: Drying and Finishing

  • Air dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources, which can warp or damage materials.
  • Once completely dry, reinsert insoles and laces.
  • Optionally, apply a waterproofing or odor-protection spray.

Quick Maintenance Between Washes

  • Sprinkle baking soda inside to absorb odor overnight.
  • Wipe soles and surfaces after each wear to prevent buildup.
  • Use a spray made from diluted white vinegar or tea tree oil as a natural deodorizer.
